Lovell (and the fictionalized version of him) experienced that same fear, but still managed to keep control of himself and his crew. Lovell was smart, capable, and level-headed--everything you would want in a mission commander. Lovell kept his crew on task and never gave in to any drama. He had one goal-- to get his crew home safely. It certainly didn't hurt that Lovell was also an experienced pilot who could successfully fly a damaged tin can through space that had as much power as a coffee maker. As my mom would say, "they don't make 'em like that anymore." That's why Jim Lovell, as portrayed by a young Tom Hanks, would be my mission commander.

Similar to Lovell in '"Apollo 13",' Commander Xu was also an incredibly competent mission commander/pilot hybrid, which seems to be a common redundancy on fictional space ships. It makes sense that a mission commander also knows how to pilot the ship. As both a commander and a pilot, Xu would be my choice as our ship's pilot. SPOILER: Lest we forget, Xu also sacrificed himself for the good of the ship. (Xu unbuckled himself from his seat to remove the water shield to reduce the speed of impact, which saved the ship, but led to his untimely demise.)
EDITED: My original choice was Dr. Ian Malcolm from '"Jurassic Park".' I think I accidentally confused two characters played by JEFF GOLDBLUM. Since Ian Malcolm is not technically an astronaut I am supplementing this with the correct choice of David Levinson from '"Independence Day",' who did travel in space in an alien craft.

Dr. Gordon was not known for her bedside manner, but she was perhaps the smartest person on the Solaris research station. She didn't allow her emotions to cloud her judgement and knew when it was time to go. I think we need an on board doctor who is smart, capable, and pragmatic. Space travel is difficult and arduous, so Doctor Gordon would be a welcomed addition. It doesn't hurt that I absolutely adore VIOLA DAVIS.

Every doctor needs a medical team. Bishop would be the perfect medic because he could be programmed with whatever knowledge you would want him to have. MISSION CONTROL - "Commander Bowman"Carrie Anne Moss in 'Red Planet'
There really aren't that many mission controllers in the realm of scifi films, which is unfortunate. A few of my top choices have already been taken and I can't chose two characters from the same film. So I choose Commander Bowman from '"Red Planet".' Bowman could think on her feet when needed and she was tough. Bowman was also completely dedicated to bringing her crew back to the ship safely. Technically she was a mission commander, not a mission controller, but if I had my way, Bowman would be on the ground in mission control taking charge behind the scenes.
THE RULES1.) Assemble a diverse team of astronauts for an interstellar expedition.
2.) Use characters who are "astronauts" in some sense of that word.
3.) Humans from our solar system only.

Houtong is a small mining town located in Rueifang District of Taiwan, a district renowned for its rich, well-preserved railway culture with the old Yilan Line which was built during the Japanese colonial period for transporting resources out of northern Taiwan. Things took an unexpected turn sometime around 2008, when a cat lover organized a team of volunteers to give the neighborhood's abandoned cats a better living environment. She claims the descendants of Schneider, who died nearly 20 years ago, showed her the letters. She said she copied them down before they were sold on to a collector.

One passed over our car high in the sky, but not as high as the other planes. As a matter of fact it caught my attention because it was a lot lower than the rest of the planes. As it passed over, I could see under it and it seemed to be solid and triangular shaped.
It had 4 lights underneath and I had to do a double take, but I could not see through the object, for example: between the wing and the body, because it was one mass.
I yelled to my husband who did not slow down because he was anxious to get to a dinner party in Toronto and the object was moving further west out of sight.
The roads were busy and we were near the parking lot of the SuperCentre plaza which was also busy. I am curious if anyone else saw this. If someone weren't paying attention they would see the lights and assume it was a plane.

Solar Superstorm Predicted For Solar Cycle 24
In between solar cycles, the sun normally has a consistent amount mellow activity. But during solar cycles the sun becomes much more active creating large flares and mass coronal ejections. What was odd about the flat spell is that the sun virtually went silent for almost 3 years. This has led some experts to conclude that solar cycle 24 may be the most active solar cycle in history and may create a solar superstorm during its peek. This comes with great concern because of what happens to earth when it's bombarded by solar superstorm.
On September 1st through the 2nd in 1859 a solar superstorm hit earth so hard that the aurora borealis could be seen as far south as the Caribbean. Miners in the rocky mountains thought it was the morning sun because the aurora was so intense. Telegraph machines were literally frying up in Europe and North America. In some cases the telegraph paper would spontaneously combust. Even more amazing, other telegraph machines continued to work without electricity! They were being powered by the geomagnetic charged atmosphere caused by the solar superstorm. Wow, free electricity!
In this day and age so many people depend on electricity for their everyday lives. Unless you're Amish, or living in a third world that has no electricity, life would become utter chaos if it were to fail. Imagine all communications seizing up including the internet, on-board computers that guide airplanes and sea vessels would fail along with power grids world wide. Can you even imagine what our world would be like if the entire planet were to simultaneously loose electricity? Experts say it could take months to have power grids back up and running, not to mention the estimated ten thousand satellites in orbit would either fall to earth or stay in orbit, worthless.

Here's the kicker, a solar superstorm is predicted to happen during the peek of the current solar cycle around end of 2012 or in early 2013, right around December 21st 2012. End of the world? No, but it would be a massive transformation fulfilling the prophecies of 2012. Scientist of-course say it's just a coincidence. Maybe so maybe not. That will always remain a mystery. What I find interesting is that the Mayan worshiped the sun as a god named Ah Kinchil, and were able to predict solar cycles which is what their calender was partially based on. Time will only tell.
I was inspired to write this post today being March 10, 2011 because of the report from the sun monitor located on the right side of my site. Today the sun had an X Class Flare (the largest class of flare) and it's the 2nd time it has happened in the last 30 days. People living at 40 degrees north latitude may be seeing aurora borealis this evening. I will make sure to go outside, away from city lights and look north.

I am not so much "anti-CSETI" as I am pro-science, and what CSETI is doing is anything but science. A point made shockingly clear simply by examining their written material.In the second sentence of the CSETI statement the following declaration is made:"CSETI believes that the extraterrestrial hypothesis is not just a theory, but is a fact of life."CSETI believes the extraterrestrial "hypothesis" it not a "theory", but a proven "fact"? I think it's time to go back to the dictionary and look up the meaning of the words "hypothesis", "theory", and "fact".CSETI "believes" the hypothesis to be fact? Not unlike the belief some people have that Jesus walked on water? Or that a UFO trails Hale Bopp because professional daydreamers get hysterical on the Art Bell program?I'm sorry, but unless CSETI can cite proofs of the extraterrestrial hypothesis it is far from a proven fact. Selling out the soul of humanity as he prostrates himself like an island savage before the machinations of the denizens of hyperspace.There is a real UFO phenomenon. It is also multifaceted. It is no single thing. And we have no idea what it is. However, it does appear to involve non-human sentience, and it does have a very dismal track record of interference throughout human history. To embrace it in light of that track record is neither wise, nor particularly encouraging for the human race.Since Brother Greer has decided to act as my spokesman in the face of these alien hordes, I would kindly ask him to refrain from inviting these entities into our lives, quit make excuses for their abuses, and concentrate solely on the legitimate issue of institutionalized secrecy inside the military industrial complex, which really has gotten out of control.His real concern needs to rest with his ET buddies. They have it within their power to end the 'cover-up' at a moments notice; but they choose not to. They have it within their power to give sekrit technology to mankind that would alleviate our current energy crisis.
