"THE UFO INCIDENT": This 1975 made-for-TV movie was based on the Betty and Barney Hill abduction. Living in rural New Hampshire at the time, Betty and Barney Hill claimed to have been abducted by aliens on September 19, 1961. According to the Hills, they were driving home on Route 3 when they saw a large, brightly lit object in the sky, which proceeded to follow them and descend on their car. As they tried to escape they soon realized that they had mysteriously traveled 35 miles and lost approximately two hours of time. They eventually discover their "lost time" through regressive hypnosis.
Their experience was the first widely publicized claim of an alien abduction, which inspired several books and film scripts. One of which was "THE UFO INCIDENT," which starred ESTELLE PARSONS and JAMES EARL JONES. According to the rumor mill, the Betty and Barney Hill abduction story will again hit the big screens. The new film will be based on the book "CAPTURED! THE BETTY AND BARNEY HILL UFO EXPERIENCE."

On this day, thousands of people in Arizona, Nevada, and the Mexican State of Senora witnessed bright lights in a variety of patterns. Many witnesses recorded the UFOs using personal camcorders and camera phones. NIGHT SKIES is reported through hypnosis-therapy by one of the alleged witnesses and abductees. I was on the 11-7 shift at work on Sat. July 20,2013 into Sun. July 21,2913. About 1:10 am or so we were sitting outside on break facing basically to the West when I noticed a red sphere appear over one of the buildings in the distance. There was an orange security light in our eyes but this object was a solid red color that appeared to be brighter. That's what caught my attention. I got up to get a closer look. It then traveled west to northeast on a steady rise about tree level and disappeared. It was partly cloudy and the moon was to our left. This lasted about 30 seconds. Then another red sphere appeared and one of the ladies on break saw this one and said what the Hell is that? I said that's why I got up to get a better look as there was one right before this one. We watched as it did basically the same thing as the first object and disappeared too. About 30-40 seconds for this one too. We thought maybe it was those Chinese Lanterns but there was no flickering of the object and it stayed a solid red with no glow or exhaust to it. There also was no sound to it. They both could have disappeared behind the clouds. Not sure but they both just appeared on the horizon. They didn't rise up. They were just there then they rose up a bit and traveled left to right. There didn't appear to be any wind blowing at the time where we were sitting. The pictures are of the second object. The first one is what we saw with the naked eye. Above is a facial portrait and below is a footprint of the Eastern Bigfoot, which is often compared to a "Caveman" in appearance. First of all, the 1976 Viking lander did NOT find organics on Mars. It was tested against soils in Antarctica and Atacama, and in both cases found microbes unlike Carl Sagan's mass spectrometer. Carl ran interference and made sure Gil's work didn't get published, but I've told that story elsewhere.
But being a mass spectrometer, and being designed for low-molecular weight gases, Sagan did NOT find perchlorates in the soil either. They would have seen them had they been there. They would have seen the chlorine too--it has an unmistakeable signature. And it would sorta have explained Levin's data because the perchlorate would have oxidized the organics to produce CO2. But they didn't see it. Nothing. Nada, despite there being good explanation if it had existed.
So Carl Sagan argued for super-metallo-peroxides. Why? Because they would produce hydrogen peroxide when water was added, which presumably would evolve carbon dioxide as measured in Gil Levin's experiment without leaving a telltale signature in the mass spec. This theory persisted despite not finding any hydrogen peroxide in the atmosphere which the chemistry required.
So once again. The results of Viking were no organics due to insensitivity and poisoning, and certainly no perchlorates.
Fast forward 32 years to 2008, and we have the Phoenix lander that decided NOT to use mass spectroscopy, but wet chemistry to determine the makeup of Mars soil. In my mind, I can't find a single reason why this is a better measurement. It's less sensitive, less accurate, less general, less power-efficient, less lightweight, less robust, etc. But nothing in the Mars program makes sense without understanding the politics, so I just assume there was someone who had the ear of a congressman. Well, in order to prep the spacecraft for detecting organics, they had to remove finger prints (or as my mechanical engineer used to say, fried chicken grease) from the satellite. How did they do this? Why, with a perchlorate wash of course.

Last week, NASA launched the spacecraft Kepler. It's purpose? To find Earth-like planets orbiting distant stars that live in the so-called "habitable zone" or "Goldilock's zone" (i.e., a region of a solar system that is "just right" for life to develop--that is, life as we know it).
The Kepler telescope will be looking at 100,000 stars in the Cygnus-Lyra region of the Milky Way for more than three years as it trails Earth's orbit around the Sun.
To date, more than 330 exoplanets--planets outside of our native solar system--have been discovered. Most of these are large, gas giants along the likes of Jupiter, and outside of what we would consider to be the habitable zone of their solar systems. And we've even found planemos--planets that aren't tied to a planet and are speeding through space. Since 1995, our technology and ability to find smaller planets seems to be getting better and more precise. Last month, the Europe's space telescope, COROT, was able to find a planet that was only half the size of planet Earth. So, the technology is there--now we just need to find planets that are about the size of Earth--meaning they'd likely be a rocky, terrestrial type planet that could possibly have an atmosphere and hold water. And that's what the Kepler craft will do.
In the meantime, here are three interesting planets that have been discovered:
* Bellerphon. Okay, so it's probably more accurately called 51 Pegasi b, which identifies the star it orbits, and its location in that star system. It was the first exoplanet that was identified, back in 1995, and named for a character from mythology, who supposedly tamed the Pegasus.
* Epsilon Eridani b. Science fiction fans will likely recognize the name of our galactic neighbor and the third closest star to Earth, only about 11 light years from us. It's the star system that the planet Vulcan in Star Trek supposedly orbits. It's also the system that the space station Babylon 5 can be found in. This planet, however, is another one of those Jupiter-like gas giants, and too close to the star to support life. However, it is possible that there is a planet in the habitable zone there.

The inactive Russian communications satellite Cosmos 2251 and the operational US satellite Iridium 33 collided at an altitude of some 790 kilometres (500 miles) above the Earth on 10 February, creating a cloud of nearly 700 pieces of space debris. Space debris remains in orbit for a considerable length of time and poses a risk to spacecraft orbiting Earth.
